Tofutown.com Quality Control information: The Tofutown.com system for protection against raw materials with genetically modified DNA
More than 80% of German consumers are opposed to foods containing genetically modified ingredients, due to the as yet unknown health and environmental risks. Tofutown.com has developed a safety system that prevents genetically modified substances from entering Viana products. According to current knowledge this applies to soybeans, products bought from exterior sources, such as miso (soy paste) and shoyu (soy sauce), sweet corn and vegetable oils (rapeseed).
Organic soybeans
1.) Farming
Tofutown.com only processes soybeans from certified organic farming (EU Regulation 2091/92). Tofutown.com only enters into contracts with farmers and importers that can supply a GMO (Genetically Modified Organisms) analysis and an EU organic farming certificate for their products, and can prove the identity of their soybeans, from seed to harvest. Tofutown.com currently processes organic soybeans from Austria, Brazil, Hungary, Italy and France.
Although we have binding contracts with organic soy growers, we at Tofutown.com would consider it misleading to refer to soybeans from our own cultivation, as that would give consumers the impression that fields cultivated by Tofutown.com itself are meant.
2.) Identity assurance
There is a principal risk that Tofutown.com’s GM-free organic soybeans become contaminated, via harvesters, cleaning and filling machines, containers, lorries and warehouses, with GM soybeans which were previously transported, cleaned or filled. For safety reasons we at Tofutown.com therefore procure whole lorry loads only and insist on being delivered to directly without the goods being reloaded, and never store in haulage company warehouses but in our own warehouse on our factory premises at Wiesbaum. Each deliverer of Tofutown.com must supply an exact diagram of processing and delivery, which is inspected by Tofutown.com’s experts.
3.) Final laboratory analyses
Before we process the soybeans, each delivery is analysed in addition to the analyses provided by the suppliers. Tofutown.com cooperates with the laboratory Gen-ial (Dr. Mücher) in Bonn. Only when both PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction) analyses are 100% negative are the beans approved for processing.
Replacing ingredients
Wherever it is possible to do so without quality loss, we replace ingredients that can also be produced using genetic modification with ones that can not. For instance, Tofutown.com no longer uses rapeseed oil as an ingredient.
Certified organic farming
Tofutown.com guarantees not only that its products are GM-free, but 98.5% of the ingredients processed are also certified organically grown. This ensures not only the lowest possible level of harmful residues, but also the full flavour that is so dear to Soyatoo! customers!
